Lieutenant Commander David Allen Winston’s (Win to his friends) meteoric rise through the ranks in the US Navy is nothing short of astonishing. At just 32 years of age Win is the youngest officer to be promoted to the rank of Lt. Commander. His future was set, or was it?
Everything changed in an instant when his only sister was murdered in a botched mob hit in her own nightclub. In his utter despair he is plunged into a dark spiral which leads him down a menacing path to vengeance.
Taking unauthorized time off from the Navy to investigate his sister's murder leads Win to be thrown out of the Navy with a Bad Conduct Discharge. Now disgraced and disgruntled he makes his way to Florida and into the seedy underbelly of the adult nightclub business. The once clean cut upstanding Naval officer is transformed into a gangster with a grudge, or is he?

When There’s Skin in the Game by D. A. Williams is a thrilling read. David Allen Winston, better known as Win, was a dedicated Navy officer with a promising career; that was until the death of his sister, Laura. She was the accidental casualty of an Italian mob hit gone wrong. Although everyone knows who is responsible, the authorities are not keen to seek justice for his sister. Hence, Win sets out in pursuit of vengeance. He is willing to do whatever it takes to fulfill his mission. First off, Win reconnects with his Uncle Aldo, a connected mobster in New York. Win learns how to survive in the world of mobsters through his time with his uncle’s crew. However, his revenge will take years to execute. Will he be able to survive till the end?
I enjoyed reading When There’s Skin in the Game. D. A. Williams delivers a classic high-stakes, fast-paced action plot through Win as the narrator. This work is a masterclass in character development; it features many minor and main characters that quickly evoke an emotional response. I really liked how Bill and his cousin, Wendy, were portrayed, and I quickly disliked them both. On the other hand, John Bear and Laura both came off as very endearing, trustworthy people. I especially loved seeing the emotional and mental rollercoaster that Win went through on his warpath. The plot twist at the end truly caught me off guard. Of note, there are several sexual scenes. Most of them were used to help the nightclub setting, prominently featured for a major portion of the story, come to life. I recommend this book to mature readers interested in a crime thriller.

Cool, throwback vibe ⭐⭐⭐⭐
June 22, 2026
This is a great debut novel by DA Williams. I enjoyed the seedy throwback vibe, with a mafia vibe. This is definitely a book that men will enjoy, as the MC is a man's man. The plot is twisty, and I didn't see the end coming as it did. The tension kept me turning the page and it was hard to put down! I hope there is a follow up, as I am on Team Win! I received a copy of this book as an ARC reader, and the review is freely given.

Film noir feel to modern story
June 20, 2026
The cover of this book sets the tone of the story perfectly. Think first person Mickey Spillane inspired, film noir type story. Win is the ideal Navy man rapidly scaling the ranks scoring all kinds of "first ever" accolades. Then his beloved sister, Laura, is senselessly killed in a mob hit ineptly carried out. It rocks his world and it all changes. He throws away everything he's worked so hard to achieve in the name of vengeance. Just when I thought I had the plot figured out it began to zig-zag erratically to an ending I didn't see coming. Be warned there are some lewd scenes but they fit the lifestyle Win has fallen into. If you enjoy Mike Hammer, you'll eat this one up! I received an ARC of the story but the review is my own freely given.
